If you learn all the tools, you can diagnose and troubleshoot some very complex system problems, crashes, annoyances, bugs, incompatibilities, CPU hogs, program lockups, etc.

There are a few utilities that are very useful by people who just want their computers to run well. (more…)

  • WordPress 3 Allow Posts in Menu (as well as Pages)

In WordPress 3.3 (and probably earlier versions) you can make custom menus in your blog.

Go to Appearance, Menus (/wp-admin/nav-menus.php) and you can add Pages or Custom Links to your menu.

But how do you put specific Posts on your menu?

Click on Screen Options (top right corner of the screen), and you’ll see check  boxes for all the types of items you can put in a menu, plus some other information such as the link target and CSS classes.

You will probably want to change the text that gets displayed in the menu (the default is the post title). Click on the drop-down arrow by each menu item, and you can change the Navigation Label (what shows in the menu) and the Description (displayed in some themes).

  • Self Help With a Proactive Attitude

Having a good outlook helps in so many ways in life. Some people rise from nothing simply because they have hope and belief. They never stop in their mission and do everything within their power to achieve success and happiness. They have a proactive attitude.

Some people think that to be successful you have to be ultra competitive and step on others to reach your goals. But living in your own personal dog eat dog world causes lots of stress and hurting others causes unhappiness.

What you need to do is enjoy life and know that happiness is closer than you think. If you are not satisfied with where your life is going, it may be because you have hurt others along the way and that your conscience is bothering you. Or it could be that your ladder of success is against the wrong wall.

What you need to know is that you are here to enjoy life and to fulfill your purpose. We all are meant to do something good, and we must pay attention to our purpose for more satisfaction in life. You might be distracted from the right path for many reasons, and as a result you gradually lose all hope until you end up feeling bad.

But where is happiness and how can you attain it? Most people seek it in the future. They wait for certain things to happen for them before they can say that they are happy. Being future oriented is good, but you can’t put all you’re eggs in that basket. You have to learn to also enjoy the moment.

You cannot over rate living more in the present. Opportunities and choices surround us in each moment. Being present helps you to be proactive and make choices that move us towards the future we want.

You have to pay attention to discovering more of your purpose in life. Working towards this purpose at a gradual but steady pace will keep you hopeful even during your darkest moments. You will have a sense of responsibility and this is what will keep your smile on despite adverse circumstances.

The peace and happiness we seek is already within. It just needs to be discovered and unearthed. Embrace what you have right now and be proactive to move towards your goals in the future. Your spirit knows no boundaries, so let possibilities guide you from day to day.

  • PayPal “last action could not be completed”

I was getting an error trying to purchase something using PayPal:

“Sorry — your last action could not be completed”

I thought it was their buy link, but I tried using one of my own links, got the same error.

Ah, probably the settings in my browser, or there’s a problem with the PP site.

In Firefox, if you delete cookies (a good idea periodically, for security), the site gets set to “disable cookies”. It’s a good default behavior, but does cause occasional problems.

Here’s how to enable cookies for a site, in Firefox (I have version 8):

    1. Click on the icon left of the browser URL (when you’re on Google.com, shows the Google “g”, when on PayPal.com, shows “PayPal, Inc. (US)”).
    2. Click “More Information”
    3. Click on Permissions at the top of the Page Info window that pops up.
    4. In the Set Cookies line, select “Allow for Session”.
  • KeyCaps Font for Computer Documentation

Font Designers: I need a KeyCaps Font!

I’ve searched the web for a web-licensed keyboard font that has the Windows Flag, Macintosh Clover, all the special keys that are needed for computer software instructional pages. Instructions like “Type your name, press <Tab>, type your email, press <Ctrl>-<Alt>-E (on OS-X, press <Clover>-E), and <Left-Click> OK.”

Don’t need all the alphabetic, number, punctuation characters, just the special keys, that are legible and look good next to normal sized text, on web pages.

Prefer it be a separate font, so can use simple commands like <KBD>e</KBD> to display <Enter> or <KBD>c</KBD> to display <Ctrl>, or <KBD>4</KBD> to display the Clover. None of those awkward <#65432;> character codes, that don’t even show in most character maps! (more…)

  • Sending email using web hosting security if ISP blocks non-subscribers

Many ISPs (internet service providers) block outgoing emails from anyone who is not a subscriber. This is an anti-spam feature; the ISP knows who you are when you send emails.

If the ISP you are connecting through blocks emails, outgoing emails would not go through, and instead you would get (in Thunderbird) an error message: “An error occurred sending mail: The mail server sent an incorrect greeting: cannot connect to SMTP server [the IP address of the server], connect error 10060.”

Normally, if you have house mates, any house mates need to put Your account information in their email program to send out emails. You would either have to type in your account information, or give it to them. They would be essentially sending emails as you, as far as your ISP is concerned.

Or, if you are a consultant, to send emails you would need to get your client’s ISP account information to send emails, definitely not professional.

Or you would have to use web mail.

If you (or your house mates) have web site hosting, then use the security of the web hosting account, instead of the security of the ISP account.

This is Very useful for people who have a notebook computer and connect from different locations, as you can send emails even if an ISP only permits their subscribers to send emails via SMTP port 25, without re-configuring your email settings.

I have web hosting through LunarPages.com, and use Thunderbird for my emails. If you have a different host or different email program, adjust accordingly.

The configuration for Thunderbird and LunarPages is:

In Tools, Account Settings, scroll down past “Local Folders” (see image 1)
    Account Settings main screen

Click on Outgoing Server (SMTP): (image 2)
    Outgoing Server settings

Select the account you want, click Edit (or click Add)

Settings like this work: (image 3)
    Outgoing Server settings
Description is for your use, put what you like there.
Server name: use the server for your web hosting account
If your ISP blocks smtp port 25, try port 587 or port 26.
User Name: your web hosting account name
Use secure connection: TLS, if available (uses your web hosting sign in, instead of your ISP sign in, to validate who you are independent of the ISP you are connecting through.

  • Secure email connections, send email from WiFi access points

Ever travel or visit friends or clients, and can’t send emails? Anti-spammer requirements of Internet Service Providers mean that you have to know the login ID and password of the account for emails to go out.

Frustrating, since all you get is an error message that your email is not deliverable.

Instead of asking your friend (or colleague) what the account name and password are for their ISP (not a good practice, in fact it would be a security risk), you would usually just send emails through your ISP’s or web host’s webmail program.

But what if you want to keep the record of the emails in your usual email program? Or you simply prefer using Thunderbird to a web browser? Or you like that your email program automatically saves drafts, but the web interface sometimes loses your work if you don’t finish soon enough?

Well, you can use the email security features of your email software and web hosting, instead of the security of the ISP you happen to be connecting through. You still have to give a user ID and password, but your own, not someone else’s.

    Set up Secure Emails

Port 587, use Secure Connection, specify TLS if available

Thunderbird Configuration (version 2.0.0.14): go to Tools, Account Settings

Scroll all the way down, to Outgoing Server (SMTP)

Select your domain name’s SMTP server (usually either smtp.yourdomain.com or mail.yourdomain.com) and click Edit.

    Change the Port: to 587

Specify Use Name and Password, and give your User Name (usually your email address).

Select what your hosting provider says you should use, or just try using TLS, if available and see if it works.

Try sending an email. You will be asked if you trust the security certificate “Website Certified by an Unknown Authority”. If you do, you will be able to send emails; specify Accept this certificate permanently.

You will probably get a message “Domain Name Mismatch”, which simply means that your web site is hosted by someone else and you haven’t purchased your own security certificate.

Let your email program know you trust the security certificate of your website:

Thunderbird setup: Tools, Options, Advanced tab, Certificates tab, View Certificates

In the Websites tab, you will see the certificate of your site hosting provider (you may have to send an email using the secure connection, to receive the certificate). I host with Lunar Pages, so my mail server certificate is from garm.lunarservers.com — you should recognize the host’s name in the certificate.

In the Websites tab, find the certificate of your host, and click Edit. Say you Trust the authenticity of this certificate and click Edit CA Trust and say This certificate can identify web sites and This certificate can identify mail users.

    You’re done!

  • Picked Lunar Pages for new web host

Lunar Pages, http://www.lunarpages.com/id/glerner had the best match of features for my needs.

For $7.95/month paid annually, I get 350GB storage, 3500 GB/Month transfers, PHP 4 and 5, and developer tools such as Ruby. I have full control over scripts to run, there is a good selection of scripts available to install with minimal configuration (questions about my business name, contact name, etc, but no configuring MySQL or editing script files). Can host 10 separate web sites in the one account. By checking the ping times I could tell the server is responsive. They showed up on several review sites with consistently good ratings.

When I installed PHPList, uploading a megabyte of data took about half the time, consistently, that it took on a site someone else hosted on Yahoo, so I switched their mailing list project to my site.
